About
John William Bailly is an artist and professor based in Lyon, France, and Miami, Florida. Bailly was born in the UK, of an American mother and French father. He received his MFA from Yale University and has been a professor in the FIU Honors College since 2003. For over fifteen years, he was the Faculty Director of study abroad to France, Italy, and Spain annually leading students through Western Europe. He currently teaches seminars about the culture, nature, and history of Miami. Bailly has earned multiple awards for his art and teaching, including two Excellence in Teaching awards, and a grant for course development from the European Union. He was the inaugural McCormick Fellow Artist-in-Residence at the Deering Estate in Miami.
His artistic practice was documented in the film “John William Bailly: In Situ” by independent filmmaker Jorge Gonzalez-Graupera. He has been awarded the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists, a State of Florida Individual Artist Grant, and a Miami-Dade County Individual Artist Grant. His work is in the permanent collection of the Frost Art Museum, Lowe Art Museum, PAMM, and ZAM. Bailly is fluent in French and English and has a working knowledge of Spanish.
